Welcome to the 13th International Cycling Safety Conference

The International Cycling Safety Conference 2025 has come to a close after three memorable days in Oslo.

On behalf of the host and organizer, Institute of Transport Economics (TØI), we thank everyone who presented, chaired, contributed, and joined us for this year’s conference.

Your energy, insight and good humour made ICSC 2025 a real success.

Highlights

The conference opened with a welcome reception in the historic halls of Oslo City Hall and continued with keynotes, parallel sessions, posters, and the Cycling vs. Safety session – a lively exchange between the City of Oslo and the Norwegian Public Roads Administration that captured the tension between increasing the share of cyclists and ensuring they remain safe.

Among the main highlights were keynote presentations by Anna Niska from Sweden and Dick de Waard from the Netherlands. Niska showed that single-bicycle crashes are the most common crash type for cyclists in most countries and highlighted how infrastructure design influences both perceived and actual safety, while de Waard focused on ageing cyclists and how cycling can be adapted to help people stay safely active for longer.

Every ICSC, two young researchers are recognised for outstanding contributions. Congratulations to this year’s award winners: Best Presentation to François May and Best Poster to Frea Deroost.

Frea Deroost (left) won best poster presentation and was congratulated by Arend Schwab (right).

Outside the academic programme, many joined the cycling tours through Oslo and the sauna sessions at Langkaia.

The conference dinner at Høymagasinet stood out as well, with a delicious three-course meal and a modern take on traditional Norwegian music and hallingdans – an unforgettable evening ending with the whole room dancing. A rare moment of collective joy in a field usually focused on risk and prevention.

Thank you again to everyone who took part in ICSC 2025.

We hope to see you at ICSC 2026 in Knoxville, Tennessee!
